Scout-Extra Credit Post-Ch. 29-31
I then saw the savior standing in a corner. I saw him and then said hey, Boo. Then Atticus introduced him as Mr. Arthur Radley. We all left Jem’s room and went out to the front porch. I said, here I’ll show you to the porch Mr. Arthur, since you don’t know your way around that well. Once we got out on the porch Atticus started making a case in his mind for Jem using self defense when Mr. Heck Tate said, “you can’t possibly think Jem did this. No Bob Ewell fell on his knife and killed himself. After that I really didn’t listen that much. Then after everyone else went back inside Mr. Arthur asked me if I could walk him home and that’s just what I did.

Jem-Chapter 26-28
It’s Halloween and I really don’t like this holiday very much. It’s for the smaller kids. Instead of planning out my costume or pranking the old ladies, I am practicing football and I am the water boy on the team. Coach says that next year if I gain 15-20 pounds I can play. I agreed to take Scout to the Halloween pageant up at the high school. She had to practice so I helped her before the performance.
We walked to the high school together and Cecil scared us pretty good after we came out from under the huge tree. I was carrying Scout’s costume and dropped it because I was so scared. We finished walking all the way up to the high school without incident. When we got there I put Scout’s ham costume behind the stage. I then gave her thirty cents and told her to hang out with Cecil, who is also in the play. The play started and Mrs. Merriweather gave this long speech and I waited for Scout to come out after Mrs. Merriweather said Po-ork. She came out a little late and was really embarrassed. We didn’t leave until the very end. Somebody asked us if we needed a ride home and I said no.
Scout an’ me started walking back home in the dark when I heard somebody coming. Scout was talkin’ about something and then I told her to hush up a minute so I could listen for it. We were stopped at the time, but as soon as we started walking I could hear him coming. I think Scout heard it too because the next time we stopped she didn’t say a word. Then right after we got out from under the big tree somebody jumped us. I was fighting him off and was telling Scout to run. The person pulled and twisted my arm until it broke real bad. After that I felt a blinding pain in my arm and then I felt him let go of me. Next thing I know I’m lying in my bed with the Doctor and Atticus standing over me. The Doctor then gave me something and I fell aslepp and didn’t hear from anybody until morning.

Tom Robinson
I was happy when Atticus told me to stand up and everyone saw that I was lopsided. Only a left handed person could have made the marks on her face and I am right handed because I have a very badly mangled left arm. I can’t even do anything with it. Mr. Ewell is left handed and I think he beat her up when he was drunk and they made up the rape part.
I went up to testify and I think that is when everyone started to believe my story. I told nothing but the truth and I think we actually have a shot at winning the case. I told them that Mayella kept on asking me to do jobs for her. She then invited me in the house and she started kissing me. She told me to kiss her back and I didn’t. Her father’s face was in the window and he yelled, get off him you whore lady. I then said that I bolted as fast as I could.

Aunt Alexandra post 5
I do have goals why I stay here, some of which include making Jean-Louise into a lady. It is hard with her being all dirty and acting like a boy. She should be wearing dresses, not rags. They also aren’t that educated on the family history which is quite disappointing. I like knowing everybody in town and them all liking me too. I think in to town very nicely, but not into Jeremy and Jean-Louise’s lives.

Journal #4-Jem
Once we came home from Finch’s landing after Christmas, we wanted to start shooting birds right away. Then Atticus told us, “you can shoot all the blue jays you want, but it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Atiicus never says anything is a sin, so it was weird to hear. I really didn’t want to shoot a mockingbird so I just shot tin cans in the backyard instead. Me and Scout went shooting past the Radley place, when I saw something really weird in the distance. Tim Johnson was down yonder hobbling up the road. We realized we were in grave peril because of the effects of a mad dog.We ran back to the house and called for Cal. She came down and saw Tim Johnson and reported him as a mad dog to everyone on our street. She called Atticus and he came with the sheriff.
Then something really weird happened. The sheriff handed the gun to Atticus and said, you’re the only one that can hit him from here Ol’ One Shot. We went over to Ms. Maudie’s and she told us that Atticus used to be the deadest shot in all of Maycomb County. I really surprised me to hear this.
My 12th birthday came and I got some money that was burning a hole in my pocket. We had to walk by Mrs. Dubose’s house on the way to town and she was on the front porch. She called Atticus a nigger-lover and she yelled some more insults. Jem went to town and bought the steam engine I wanted and I bought Scout a baton. Then as we were going home I lost my temper and cut all those hedges in that mean old lady’s yard. Then I snapped Socut’s baton in half.
Later that night Atticus made me go up and apologize to the cantankerous old lady. I told her I would try and re-grow all the plants that I cut down. That evil old lady also made me read to her every day for a month. About a month after I was done reading Atticus came home and said that that evil old lady had died

Atticus-Chapter 8-9
Uncle Jack came and visited us like he does every year for Christmas. This year I gave the kids air rifles, trying to cheer them up a bit, especially when we were about to go to Aunt Alexandra’s. I know Scout hates it when Aunt Alex tries to tell her that she needs to act more like a lady. I want to find out why Scout got into a fight with Francis and I know she wasn’t tellin’ anyone the truth when Francis accused her of calling him a whore lady.
I’m pretty upset that people are giving me and my children a hard time about the Tom Robinson case. I can deal with it and I believe Jem can too, but Scout has always had a hard time with keeping her temper. I told her as a favor to me not to get in fights any more.

Jem-Journal #2
We started playing our games like we always do, and then Scout started getting bored of playing the Rover boys. Scout started telling me to make one up and I didn’t want to. I started telling them about Hot Steam. I mean how can they not know about hot steams.
Next, Scout wanted to roll in the tire. She knows I’m too big so she made me push. It wasn’t fun at all until Scout started rollin down the hill and crashed and ended up right in front of the Radley front steps. I yelled for her to bring the tire and run. It was
real scary to see your sister to be running through the Radley yard. She didn’t get the tire and I asked her why. She told me to go get it. I ran in real fast, got the tire and tore out through the fence again.

Immigration Project Reflection
The first project we did for the immigration unit this semester was reading our immigration themed literature circles books and posting to our blog. I really liked my Lit Circles book (Hello America, by Livia Bitton Jackson) and I am very happy with my choice because it really showed what it is like to be a new immigrant and it shows all the life experiences that Elli (the character in my book) had as a new immigrant. I learned a lot of things from my book about how hard it is for a new immigrant to start their life in America with nothing. Elli and her mom came to America with nothing but a place to live at. They had to find their own way with no jobs and no money to their name.
The one thing I did not like is that you couldn’t discuss the book with your lit circles group members. All we did for the lit circles was post on our blogs and comment on other people’s blogs. We never got to discuss our book and say whether or not we liked the book. I didn’t necessarily like the blogging for our posts either; I liked what we did in the first semester where we wrote our quotes on paper and discussed the quotes with our groups. I would rather not blog for literature circles at all, but if we have to I would at least have to like the meetings back. I also think that our group all interpreted our book the same way and sometimes even had the same quotes. Overall, I would like the Lit Circles system to be changed, but I can live with it the way it is.
The second project we did for the immigration unit was actually related to our literature circles books and it had to do with art. We had to do a painting to represent a scene in our book or a new book cover. I decided to do a specific scene in my book which turned out to be a really good book cover. For my picture I did Elli and her mom standing on a boat looking at the Statue of Liberty which is a important part in the very beginning of the book. I really thought that it reflected on the novel I read because it stayed true to that scene and everybody in my group knew form what point in the book it was from. I thought that it was really fun to paint in humanities class because it was a nice change form the other stuff we do in that class. I thought that the final product of my painting turned out very good except for the face on the Statue of Liberty. I think that to enhance my final product I could have done better on my Statue of Liberty, and also try not to make as many mistakes in the colors that I used. I thought that doing a painting for literature circles was a lot better than doing a book review. I thought that using art to reflect on our literature circles books was a good, new, and inventive way to change lit circles.
The last project we did in humanities for immigration was the song that we had to write, sing, and create a music video for. Our topic was Filipinos and we wrote a song to the tune of the popular song, Soul Survivor by Young Jeezy and Akon. We had to research the Filipinos and what we found was very interesting.
My third project of the immigration unit was also my favorite. We had to find an immigrant and go interview them about their experience in coming to America. I thought that my interview process went very well. I did my first interview by phone, my second as the in person, and third interview by email. I did it different from everybody else because I was the only person to do the in person interview as my second interview instead of my third. I thought that it was good that we had to interview our person more than once. It gave you time to think of new and inventive questions while you also got time to space the whole interview out. In my first interview, I learned that Laura was a lawyer back in her home country of Romania. In my second interview I learned about Romania and how it was an unsafe communist country in the 1980’s and that is why Laura and her family left. In my third interview I learned that gymnastics were required in Romanian schools when she was a kid.
I thought that interviewing a person who came to this country helped me understand the immigration way better than I would have out of a textbook. The hands on experience really helped me learn about immigration and I hope we get to do hands on stuff like this in high school. The gift that I am giving to Laura is a painting. It was really cool to make it myself and I now know all the hard work that it takes to paint a 14 x 18 canvas. I really hope she likes my gift because I spent a lot of time on it.
Overall, I thought that the immigration unit in the first part of humanities was a very important one and I learned a lot from it. We did a lot of projects varying from paintings, to interviews, and to even singing and dancing.

Hello America POst #6
Quote #1: “Are you interested in the presidential campaign?”
Significance: It shows how Elli is adjusting to the new life in
Personal connection: I am very different in how I handle a new experience like going to a different country. I try to adapt into their culture when I am there. That is only on trips though, not moving to a different country.
Question: I have all my questions answered throughout my reading.
Quote #2: I did it, I did it!” screamed Elli, “I got my high school diploma!”
Significance: I really am happy that Elli got her high school diploma. It is the first of many steps at a first class education. The book ends here, but I hope she goes onto college.
Personal connection: I was also very happy when I found out that I was going to graduate elementary school. It is not the same as I high school diploma, but I was very happy at the time.
Question: Do you think Elli went to college?

Hello America Post #5
Elli was at camp for the first time and was in a really good mood. Elli was joking around and Oded had just offered her his jacket. It was kind of a weird comment, but I think that it was just a joke.
I remember the first time I went to camp and was really nervous. Instead of being quiet I met a few friends and started joking around with them.
Why did Oded say that weird comment to Elli?
“Tomorrow we have field trips-I may not be able to come. I’ll try. If I can’t, I’ll make sure someone else will.” Pg. 201, Paragraph 7
Elli is at the hospital, recovering from a severe gall bladder infection. She is a camp counselor and cares a lot about her campers. She is a great person and is also a very caring person which is a great trait to have.
Elli is the main character and is also my favorite in the book. She cares about her family and is very happy that she came to America.
Why was her pain so sudden?

Hello America Post 4
Quote 1: “You don’t need an invitation to a chicken market.” Pg. 160, Paragraph 7
I think that it is funny that Elli thinks you need an invitation to a chicken market. A chicken market is an American thing so her brother says that it would be weird for her to go. She doesn’t really understand what a chicken market is.
A chicken market is like a farmers market and I have been to some of those. They are defiantly American, but they do produce some good vegetables.
Quote 2: “Mr. Rosenfeld wants you to meet his nephew so call him back,” said her brother. Pg. 161, Paragraph 1
I just think that it is funny that her brother remembered that after the chicken market conversation. I wonder what he wants Elli to meet his nephew about. I hope that it is for a date.
I have never had a blind date and I really hope that Elli has her first one. I really think that it would be weird to go

Hello America Post 3
Hello
Quote #1: “I think I’ve found something, The Jewish National Fund is looking for an office worker.” Mrs. Ryder said. Pg. 83, Paragraph 1
I think that it is good that Elli is looking for a job after she came to
I have always wanted a job just to raise money. I wish that 14 year olds could get a job and I would work hard for some money.
Why is she asking Mrs. Ryder to help her with her job search?
Quote #2: “I barely managed 50 before I started developing an acute pain in my back,”
Elli confessed. Pg. 79, Paragraph 4
I think that Elli made the right decision in confessing to her mom that her back hurt. Back injuries are the worst of all and I wouldn’t want it to happen to her at such a young age. I am very glad that she made the decision to choose a different job.
My Grandpa has had back problems for a few years now and is miserable. It is very bothersome and has made him stop playing golf, his favorite sport. I wouldn’t want Elli to stop her life over a back problem at such a young age.
Why was her back hurting at such a young age?

Hello America Post 1
Hello America Post One:
Quote One: “There, she emerges out of the haze, there is no mistake about it, The Statue of Liberty,” said Elli gleefully. Pg. 2, Paragraph 3
This quote really shows how the person, Elli is really excited to see the statue of liberty. Elli is a Jewish person coming to America after the Holocaust and is eager to find her place in America. I think that the Statue of Liberty was a symbol that she has finally found her place in America.
I have been to the Statue of Liberty on a trip and it gave me a great feeling of hope and freedom. I can see why survivors of the Holocaust felt free when they came to America and saw the Statue of Liberty. The Holocaust was a horrible time for Jewish people and they finally felt free when they came to America.
Why did so many people come to America with no money?
Hello America Post Two:
Quote Two: “God Almighty, you have a really bad case of seasickness,” said the Captain to Elli. Pg. 11, Paragraph 4
This quote shows how Elli has a pretty bad job. She sails across to Europe, but has a bad case of seasickness. It sounds like it is very unpleasant to have seasickness and she has a very bad case of it.
I have also had seasickness on a boat before and it is very unpleasant. Seasickness is very bad so I think it is stupid to work on a ship. I would never work on a ship if I had a bad case of seasickness.
Why would somebody want to work on a ship if they suffer from seasickness?

Children of Immigrants
- The photo that I chose is the picture of the Santa Lucia celebration. I chose the picture because it really struck me that the lady had burning candles on top of her head. The picture had the lady with candles walking into a room with an old Lady in a cheetah print jacket.
- The quote that I chose is, "I believe as an individual, I can help America achieve its goals. I remember last year I helped collect canned foods for the soup kitchen. Also I helped raise money when the twin towers fell. I believe things like this may seem little, but can mount to larger and bigger things." This quote struck me because it was a person in Pakistan helping the United States.

Immigration
An immigrant is a person who moves to some place where they are not from. It could be a person moving to
There are many reasons why an immigrant would want to leave its old country. They might think they can get a better life somewhere else. Another reason could be that the place they want to go to is beautiful. The person could want to go to
