Atticus-Chapter 8-9

I’m having a real hard time with the kids. I love them tons, but it is hard to raise them without a mother. With me being gone all day for work it is real hard to play with them we you are dead tired. It was real cool when it started to snow for the first time in a lot of years. It made me real happy to see them happy. They built a wonderful snowman that looked a lot like Mr. Avery, so I made them disguise it. Jem, Scout and I went to sleep that night and I woke to smell of smoke. My first thought was to get the kids out, but then I realized that it was Ms. Maudie’s house on fire. I got the kids out of the house and told them to go stand in front of the Radley gate. After the flames had gone we went back to the house and I noticed that their was a blanket around Scout’s shoulder’s. I then told them that it was Boo Radley’s because he was the only person who would do something like that.

Uncle Jack came and visited us like he does every year for Christmas. This year I gave the kids air rifles, trying to cheer them up a bit, especially when we were about to go to Aunt Alexandra’s. I know Scout hates it when Aunt Alex tries to tell her that she needs to act more like a lady. I want to find out why Scout got into a fight with Francis and I know she wasn’t tellin’ anyone the truth when Francis accused her of calling him a whore lady.

I’m pretty upset that people are giving me and my children a hard time about the Tom Robinson case. I can deal with it and I believe Jem can too, but Scout has always had a hard time with keeping her temper. I told her as a favor to me not to get in fights any more.
