Hello America Post 3

Hello America Post #3

Quote #1: “I think I’ve found something, The Jewish National Fund is looking for an office worker.” Mrs. Ryder said. Pg. 83, Paragraph 1

I think that it is good that Elli is looking for a job after she came to America. She didn’t care what it was. She just wanted a job.

I have always wanted a job just to raise money. I wish that 14 year olds could get a job and I would work hard for some money.

Why is she asking Mrs. Ryder to help her with her job search?

Quote #2: “I barely managed 50 before I started developing an acute pain in my back,”

Elli confessed. Pg. 79, Paragraph 4

I think that Elli made the right decision in confessing to her mom that her back hurt. Back injuries are the worst of all and I wouldn’t want it to happen to her at such a young age. I am very glad that she made the decision to choose a different job.

My Grandpa has had back problems for a few years now and is miserable. It is very bothersome and has made him stop playing golf, his favorite sport. I wouldn’t want Elli to stop her life over a back problem at such a young age.

Why was her back hurting at such a young age?

Hello America Post 1

Hello America Post One:

Quote One: “There, she emerges out of the haze, there is no mistake about it, The Statue of Liberty,” said Elli gleefully. Pg. 2, Paragraph 3
This quote really shows how the person, Elli is really excited to see the statue of liberty. Elli is a Jewish person coming to America after the Holocaust and is eager to find her place in America. I think that the Statue of Liberty was a symbol that she has finally found her place in America.
I have been to the Statue of Liberty on a trip and it gave me a great feeling of hope and freedom. I can see why survivors of the Holocaust felt free when they came to America and saw the Statue of Liberty. The Holocaust was a horrible time for Jewish people and they finally felt free when they came to America.
Why did so many people come to America with no money?

Hello America Post Two:

Quote Two: “God Almighty, you have a really bad case of seasickness,” said the Captain to Elli. Pg. 11, Paragraph 4
This quote shows how Elli has a pretty bad job. She sails across to Europe, but has a bad case of seasickness. It sounds like it is very unpleasant to have seasickness and she has a very bad case of it.
I have also had seasickness on a boat before and it is very unpleasant. Seasickness is very bad so I think it is stupid to work on a ship. I would never work on a ship if I had a bad case of seasickness.
Why would somebody want to work on a ship if they suffer from seasickness?

Children of Immigrants

  1. The photo that I chose is the picture of the Santa Lucia celebration. I chose the picture because it really struck me that the lady had burning candles on top of her head. The picture had the lady with candles walking into a room with an old Lady in a cheetah print jacket.
  2. The quote that I chose is, "I believe as an individual, I can help America achieve its goals. I remember last year I helped collect canned foods for the soup kitchen. Also I helped raise money when the twin towers fell. I believe things like this may seem little, but can mount to larger and bigger things." This quote struck me because it was a person in Pakistan helping the United States.

FROM HAVEN TO HOME

It was really interesting to go to the exhibit and learn about Jewish history. I learned a lot about Jewish history. The most interesting thing I learned about iconic Jewish people was Hank Greenburg. He was a baseball player for Detroit in the 1930’s, during the time that Adolf Hitler was planning his rein of terror over Jews. He hit 58 home runs one season, coming within two home runs of the record for most home runs hit in a season. I also learned about the hardest time for the Jewish people, the rein of Adolf Hitler. World War II was the time were approximately 200,000 Jews found refuge in the U.S. Jewish people also had very different ideas about the civil war. The Jews normally supported the place they lived in. I found it interesting that the Jews were split over the civil war. I thought that they would all support the North and Abraham Lincoln. There are a lot of modern and famous Jewish people. Some of those people include Dr. Seuss and Jerry Seinfeld.

Immigration

An immigrant is a person who moves to some place where they are not from. It could be a person moving to Britain from India, or somebody moving from Mexico to the United States. Immigrants differ in many ways. Some can know the language and plan on coming to the country for a long time, or they can be illegal immigrants and do it as a spur of the moment thing.

There are many reasons why an immigrant would want to leave its old country. They might think they can get a better life somewhere else. Another reason could be that the place they want to go to is beautiful. The person could want to go to Italy from China of a place like that. China is overcrowded and Italy is beautiful and spacious. One more reason they might want to leave is because the economy is horrible in their home country. The U.S. has a bad economy so Americans might want to move to a different place.

The U.S. has many things that are different from other countries. The U.S. has a lot of freedom compared to other countries. The U.S. has a democratic government, which is different from a lot of other countries. The U.S. has become very over-populated with immigration and I think that that is part of the reason that our economy is horrible. My life has changed a lot due to immigration. We have a lot more Mexican food places, and the Chinese-Americans invented my favorite food, Orange Chicken.
