Jem-Chapter 26-28

Today, Scout came home from school and told me about how Mrs. Whatshername was a hypocrite. Scout told me about how she says the Nazis are so bad and then she mentioned the case. A fire lit inside me and I just started yelling at her. That case had such a ludicrous outcome that whenever someone mentions it I go off like an erupting volcano.
It’s Halloween and I really don’t like this holiday very much. It’s for the smaller kids. Instead of planning out my costume or pranking the old ladies, I am practicing football and I am the water boy on the team. Coach says that next year if I gain 15-20 pounds I can play. I agreed to take Scout to the Halloween pageant up at the high school. She had to practice so I helped her before the performance.
We walked to the high school together and Cecil scared us pretty good after we came out from under the huge tree. I was carrying Scout’s costume and dropped it because I was so scared. We finished walking all the way up to the high school without incident. When we got there I put Scout’s ham costume behind the stage. I then gave her thirty cents and told her to hang out with Cecil, who is also in the play. The play started and Mrs. Merriweather gave this long speech and I waited for Scout to come out after Mrs. Merriweather said Po-ork. She came out a little late and was really embarrassed. We didn’t leave until the very end. Somebody asked us if we needed a ride home and I said no.
Scout an’ me started walking back home in the dark when I heard somebody coming. Scout was talkin’ about something and then I told her to hush up a minute so I could listen for it. We were stopped at the time, but as soon as we started walking I could hear him coming. I think Scout heard it too because the next time we stopped she didn’t say a word. Then right after we got out from under the big tree somebody jumped us. I was fighting him off and was telling Scout to run. The person pulled and twisted my arm until it broke real bad. After that I felt a blinding pain in my arm and then I felt him let go of me. Next thing I know I’m lying in my bed with the Doctor and Atticus standing over me. The Doctor then gave me something and I fell aslepp and didn’t hear from anybody until morning.

I sat in court all day and everyone was testifying against me. It really made me scared that I was going to be convicted for rape. That all changed when Mayella Ewell went up to the witness stand. She was slow on her answers and sounded as though this was all set up. I thought it was all along, but now with the look on everybody’s faces they were starting the doubt the testimony given.

I was happy when Atticus told me to stand up and everyone saw that I was lopsided. Only a left handed person could have made the marks on her face and I am right handed because I have a very badly mangled left arm. I can’t even do anything with it. Mr. Ewell is left handed and I think he beat her up when he was drunk and they made up the rape part.

I went up to testify and I think that is when everyone started to believe my story. I told nothing but the truth and I think we actually have a shot at winning the case. I told them that Mayella kept on asking me to do jobs for her. She then invited me in the house and she started kissing me. She told me to kiss her back and I didn’t. Her father’s face was in the window and he yelled, get off him you whore lady. I then said that I bolted as fast as I could.
